Reality: 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime (CDC). Abuse is not always physical — abuse can also be emotional, verbal, financial, or sexual. Survivors often face anxiety, depression, PTSD, and deep wounds to their sense of self.
Impact on the Self: You might feel disconnected from who you are. You might not be aware of what you are feeling. Shame, guilt, and fear can keep you stuck — but those feelings aren’t yours to carry. Healing means learning to trust yourself again.
Survivors: Abuse is not your fault. You are not alone. Healing looks different for everyone.
Consider: Supportive therapy (individual, group, or walk & talk), journaling, creative outlets, grounding tools, rebuilding your support circle
If You Love Someone Who’s Struggling: Listen. Believe. Don't judge.
Instead of “Why didn’t you leave?” — try “I’m here for you.”
Offer resources, not pressure. Your steady support makes a difference.
